Bottling Plant CIP Room Ventilation

A bottling plant's clean-in-place room lost all six of its fans to drives locked out on alarms. We traced the faults, reprogrammed the drives and got the room breathing again.

The Challenge

The clean-in-place room at a Northern California bottling plant lost its ventilation. A supply fan, two exhaust fans and three return fans were all down, their variable-speed drives locked out on alarms that would not reset.

A CIP room without airflow fills with heat and chemical vapor, so it was not a problem that could wait.

What We Did

  1. Traced the lockouts to drives set up to run off the wrong control signals, and corrected the control setup.
  2. Reprogrammed every drive for the motor it actually runs. None had been set up for the motors installed.
  3. Pulled filter media that had wrapped around a supply fan's blade and shaft.
  4. Found a loose power connection causing a phase-loss alarm on an exhaust fan's drive, and tightened it.

The Result

All six fans are running again. The plant's make-up air units and its supply and exhaust fans are now on our preventive maintenance program, so belts, bearings, filters and controls get checked before they fail.
